Basilica di San Lorenzo The Basilica of San Lorenzo is the oldest cathedral, and one of the largest, in Florence and dates back to 393AD. The San Lorenzo was one of a kind until the 8th century and was rebuilt in the 11th century to represent a Romanesque style, and lost its cathedral status to Santa Reparata. The basilica of San Lorenzo is the centre point of the Piazza San Lorenzo, which is in the centre of Florence and has a thriving market on a daily basis. There are many other interesting Renaissance buildings and statues located around the square. The interior of the church is lined with chapels, the interior facade is by Michelangelo and Donatello, Rosso Fiorentino and Verrocchio all played a part in the design. Open week days 10.00am - 5.30pm. Closed Sundays
