Cricket Festival
The Cricket Festival, Festa del Grillo, is a Florentine tradition that takes part in Cascine Park. The festival celebrates the days when men placed crickets on the doorstep of their loved one to serenade them. The day attracts picnickers and the park is filled with vendors selling sweets and balloons.
Also you will find vendors selling caged crickets in painted cages. The crickets are released into the long grass and the children hunt for them. It is thought that if crickets sing to you they will bring your family for good luck for the following year. The children free their crickets at the end of the day, also for good luck.
