Florence Monuments
The are many monuments all over Florence city. Please note that tourist attractions, including churches and museums, do not come cheap in Florence. Very few will offer combined/joint tickets.
The Palazzo Vecchio, 'old palace' is also known as the Palazzo della Signoria, and was built over at least three stages between the 13th and 16th centuries.
The Ponte Vecchio, 'Old Bridge', was built in ancient times by the Etruscans and located over the widest part of the River Arno.
The Pitti Palace was formerly host to all the ruling dynasties, the Medici's, Lorraine's, Bourbon's, Bonapartes and Savoy's.
Florence's skyline is dominated by the Cathedral which is dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore, and is a typical Italian Gothic structure. The designer, Arnolfo di Cambio, enlarged the original religious structure and was finished around 1367.
The Dome, known as the Cupola, was built between 1420 and 1436, and was built by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Giotto's bell tower, known as the Camanile di Giotto, was started in 1334 and is clad in the same three coloured marbles of those in the Duomo.
Known as the political heart of the city the Piazza della Signoria began to take shape from 1268 onwards.
The Basilica of San Lorenzo is the oldest cathedral, and one of the largest, in Florence and dates back to 393AD.
The Medici Chapels are part of the Basilica San Lorenzo, and are the mausoleum for the Medici family.
One of tuscany's finest examples of Romanesque architecture, the San Miniato al Monte was constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries on the site of a 4th century chapel.
In 1294 Arnolfo di Cambio designed and constructed a masterpiece of Gothic art, the Basilica di Santa Croce.
Housed in the Santa Maria del Carmine churched is the Cappella Branacacci, Brancacci Chapel.
The Palazzo dei Congressi is housed in the 18th century Villa Vittoria in the heart of Florence.
Michelozzo built the Palazzo Medici Riccardi between 1444 and 1464, and was enlarged by the Riccardi family a couple of centuries later.
Fondazione Romano nel Cenacolo di Santo Spirito
Located in the Piazza Santo Spirito this Augustinian complex is one of Florence's greatest religious and artistic monuments.
The Fortezza da Basso was built on the outskirts of a medieval city and is now a major exhibition centre in Florence.
The Santa Maria Novella Church was constructed by two Dominican monks in 1246. The church was finished in 1360 under the direction of Brother Iacopo Talenti.

The Santa Maria Novella Train Station is located in the heart of Florence and is one of the most important modern architectural breakthroughs.
