The Medicean City Walls Great walls have surrounded Grosseto in the 12th, 13th and 14th Century, having been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The hexagonalwalls were finally replaced during the Medici era and were designed by Baldassare Lanci. The walls took 19 years to complete, and most of the workforce consisted of convicts. Until 1757 a ditch surrounded the outward part of the walls. At each angle are five sided bastions, in the shape of an arrow, on which stands the remains of the guard room and storerooms. The walls are now a public garden.
