La Specola Natural History Museum of the University of Florence - Zoological Section "La Specola". The museum was originally opened to the public under the name of Imperial Royal Museum of Physics and Natural History. The Florentine history collections were started by the Medici family and the Lorraines. The Torrigiani palazzo was purchased to house the collections and became known as 'La Specola' due to the tower that was constructed in 1789, and used as an astronomic observatory. On display you will find models of human anatomy, plants and comparative anatomy. The wax collection was created to teach anatomy rather than use cadavers. The displays cover 34 rooms, 24 zoology, 10 wax, and among the collections there are 5 works by famous Scicilian wax modeler Giulio Gaetano Zumbo.
