The Leaning Tower of Pisa Located in Cathedral Square, construction of the tower started in 1174 by Bonanno Pisano. Work on the building had to stop by the time it had reached its third floor as it had already started to sink into the sandy ground. Giovanni Di Simone completed the tower by crowning it with the belfry in the 14th century. The tower stands at nearly 56 metres and a small spiral staircase, compromising 294 steps, runs through the centre and up through all eight floors. The tower is supported by 3 metres of foundations! The belfry holds seven bells and each one corresponds to a note on the musical scale. The oldest bell is known as 'Pasquareccia'. The top of the tower offers great views of the mountains of Garfagnana, the Apuanian Alps and the Monte Pisano. Galileo Galilei also carried out some of his famous gravity experiments from the top of the tower.
