Livorno Livorno is a fortified small Medicean town located on the coast of Tuscany, 18km from Pisa. Known as Leghorn in english, it is the second largest city in Tuscany. The town is a mixture of old and new, with a network of canals, humped back bridges, sea food and a fast paced street life. The port in Livorno was developed in 1618 by the Medici and was a 'free port' that encouraged many cultures including Spanish Muslims, Jews and English Catholics to name a few. The port now runs regular ferries to other parts of Italy and its surrounding islands. There is also a thriving fishing trade. In the heart of the town you can still see the pentagonal shape of the Medicean city, flanked by palaces and porticos that were rebuilt after World War II. The main square, Piazza Grande, is at the centre of the Medicean city and you will find the Municipal Palace, the Dome and the Palazzo Grande. Livorno has a wealth of history and many public and religious buildings and monuments of interest. Along the northwest of the town is 'The New Venice', Venezia Nuova, built and designed by Giovan Battista Santi and inspired by Ferdinando II e Cosimo III de Medici in the 1600's.
