Piazza della Signoria Known as the political heart of the city the Piazza della Signoria began to take shape from 1268 onwards. The name comes from the most important monument there, the Palazzo della Signoria. The square is a large open air museum with great sculptures including the copy of David by Michelangelo, the Fountain of neptune by Ammannati, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I dÈ Medici by Giambologna and Cellini's bronze Perseus. Other buildings that surround the square include the martyrdom of Savonarola and the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni. During the spring and summer can catch a carraige ride from the Piazza della Signoria through Florence. Connecting the square to the Duomo you will find a lively shopping street.
