Pisa Pisa is located in western Tuscany and is famous for its Leaning Tower. Pisa has been a seside settlement for over 3000 years and has hundreds of years of history. It has many historical monuments and buildings and retains its medieval appearance. Pisa is also home to one of Italy's finest university's, established in 1343. Much of Pisa is built on fine sand, and the Leaning Tower isn't the only building no longer standing upright. Several buildings in the Field of Miracles are noticably lurching to one side. The historic centre of Pisa is located on the banks of the River Arno and is still surrounded by 12th century walls. The main street through Pisa, Via Santa Maria, is lined with palaces and mansions dating back to the 16th century.
