Ponte Vecchio The Ponte Vecchio, 'Old Bridge', was built in ancient times by the Etruscans and located over the widest part of the River Arno. The bridge has been restored and rebuilt many times and has a long history. The bridge carried a lot of traffic and a few entrpenuers decided to take advantage and set up shop on the bridge itself. As the bridge was used by travelling soldiers the first of these shops were blacksmiths, tanners and butchers. After time the original merchants were replaced by artists and goldsmiths, and the number of shops increased considerably. The upper level and back row was added between 1565 and 1800 and the increase in shops helped to strengthen the bridge. The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge to survive World War 2 and the great flood of 1966, although the shops were washed away the bridge was left standing.
