San Miniato al Monte One of tuscany's finest examples of Romanesque architecture, the San Miniato al Monte was constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries on the site of a 4th century chapel. The facade of green and white marble is decorated by fine arcading. There is a 12th century mosaic of Christ between St. Miniato and the Madonna. There is an unfinished 15th century campanile that was destroyed in the 1530 seige of Florence. The interior of this church is tripartite with a trussed timber roof. Inside the church, laid into the pavement you will find marble intersias representing symbolic animals and the signs of the zodiac. Located in the centre of the church there is the Chapel of the Crucifix, designed by Michelozzo, and decorated by Lucca Robbia with delicate glazed vaulting. The church sits at the top of a very steep hill a short distance from the centre of Florence. It's location offers some of the best scenic views of the city. Open: 8am-12.30pm and 2pm-7pm. Holy days 8am-7pm Price: Free
