Santa Maria della Spina The Church of the Santa Maria della Spina is small but beautiful example of Pisian Gothic. Built on the banks of the River Arno, construction began in 1230, next to the Ponte Novo bridge. The bridge was destroyed in the 15th century and never rebuilt. The church was constructed under the supervision of the Pisan sculptor and architect, Lupo di Francesco. During the 15th century the church under went several restorations, to correct the subsidance caused by the river. In 1871 the whole building was dismantled and rebuilt one metre higher. DUring this upheaval many of the statues were removed and copies put in their place. The church holds a fascinating history, and holds many important works. Well worth a visit!
