Viareggio Carnival
The Viareggio Carnival gets underway during February and is an ancient propriatory rite dating back to the 17th century. On good fated years the bishop lights the 'small dove', a rocket covered in paper and pulp, that reaches the high altar. On ill fated years the wagon, which is full of crackers, 'explodes'.
The parade consists of many large carnival wagons of which the best one wins a prize. During February Miss Carnevale di Viareggio is elected as well as a concert highlighting the carnivals songs, which is performed at the Teatro Politeama.
The carnival carries on into March where an overall winner of the carnival is awarded a prize. Also on display you will find an exhibition of previous costumes and figures known as the Carnevaledesign. Throughout the season there is a wealth of entertainment including football tournaments and theatre events.
