The Baptistery

The Baptistery is a vast circular building with a domed ceiling that Deotisalvi started construction in 1153. The Baptistery was further developed with an upper level 100 years later.

The dome is divided into twelve segments partly lead and partly tiled. The interior is divided by columns and five panels have sculptures showing episodes of Christs life.

Located in the middle is the font, raised on three steps and with a statue of Italo Griselli in the centre, that was created by Guido Bigarelli. The pulpit was created by Nicola Pisano in 1260.

Open: April-September 8am-7.40pm. March-October 9am-5.40pm. November-February 9am-4.40pm
